CASA SAN ALFONSO – ASTORGA: Acogida a Peregrinos / Welcome to Pilgrims
El Papa Francisco indicó a los jóvenes argentinos, durante la JMJ Río de Janeiro que, si querían vivir el Evangelio, les recomendaba leer dos pasajes fundamentales: las Bienaventuranzas y Mateo 25, esa parábola en la que Jesús se identifica con los pobres, abandonados, enfermos y peregrinos.
Durante los meses de julio y agosto, una comunidad internacional formada por laicos, familias y religiosos redentoristas ha desarrollado una Acogida Cristiana a los peregrinos que se detienen en Astorga mientras realizan el Camino de Santiago. Esta comunidad reside en la Casa San Alfonso, creada por la Provincia Redentorista de Madrid para desarrollar este proyecto de atención pastoral a peregrinos, en el que se han implicado redentoristas de toda Europa.
Los Misioneros Redentoristas se integran dentro de una red denominada “Acogida Cristiana en el Camino”, formada fundamentalmente por albergues y monasterios que desean recuperar las raíces cristianas de la acogida a los peregrinos compostelanos.
Cada día, los miembros de esta comunidad internacional ofrecen acogida e información en la puerta de la Iglesia redentorista del Perpetuo Socorro, enfrente del Albergue “Siervas de María”, justo en el lugar por el que los peregrinos acceden a la ciudad de Astorga. El servicio que se realiza es evangelio al pie de la letra: “Fui peregrinos y me acogisteis”. En cada peregrino se ve el rostro de Cristo, que camina a nuestro lado.
A cada peregrino se le saluda, se le ofrece información o el sello para su credencial de peregrino, y se le invita a la oración de la noche. El final de la mañana y parte de la tarde es un continuo ir y venir de peregrinos, y muchos de ellos entran en nuestra Iglesia a rezar. También de 19 a 19:30 horas pueden celebrar el sacramento de la reconciliación. Pero el acto más importante tiene lugar a las 21 horas, con la Oración de la Noche, que finaliza con la Bendición de los Peregrinos.
Los peregrinos dan las gracias por este servicio, y son muchos los que expresan su deseo de que en más lugares hubiera una oferta espiritual de este tipo. Cada una de las personas que ha formado parte de la comunidad internacional puede contar anécdotas de este encuentro con los peregrinos, tan reconfortante para unos y otros. Algunos, después de la oración, han sentido la necesidad de confesarse o hablar con un sacerdote, otros han salido llorando emocionados o sintiendo que sus fuerzas se renovaban. En la puerta, sus rostros cansados eran sonrisas de agradecimiento y a veces palabras impactantes acerca de su experiencia del Camino.
Este proyecto acaba de comenzar este verano, pero ya forma parte de los proyectos que la Conferencia Redentorista de Europa quiere desarrollar con laicos y jóvenes de toda Europa. De hecho, en el Encuentro Europeo de Jóvenes Redentoristas de San Sperate (Cerdeña, Italia) ha sido presentado a todos los países en varias ocasiones.
La comunidad internacional de Acogida al Peregrino ha sido una realidad gracias a muchas personas. No hacía falta grandes requisitos, sino disponibilidad para el servicio. Provenientes de otras naciones han estado los PP. Marcin Zubik (Polonia), Klemens Nodewald (Alemania, Prov. San Clemente), Paul Turley (Irlanda) y la misionera laica Fainche Ryan (Irlanda), cuya presencia agradecemos de todo corazón.
También han participado jóvenes, Javier Alonso (Sevilla) y Laura Granja (Madrid), y laicos redentoristas: Carmen Castro (Jaén), Enrique Casanueva, y tres familias de Misioneros laicos del Santísimo Redentor: Pili Hernán y Rafa Junquera, Inma Huertas y Antonio Fuertes, Mónica de Simón y Daniel Primo junto con sus hijas Blanca y Paula, todos procedentes del Perpetuo Socorro de Madrid. Los redentoristas españoles que han acogido a los peregrinos han sido los Postulantes Carlos Alfonso Diego y Guillermo Rejas, los Estudiantes Antonio Puerto y Carlos A. Galán, y los sacerdotes Damián Mª Montes, Víctor Chacón, Manuel Cabello y Laureano Del Otero, juntamente con el superior de la comunidad, P. José Luis Almendros, que ha presidido la oración en muchas ocasiones, y el P. Paulino Sutil, responsable de la Casa San Alfonso. Conviene destacar la participación de miembros de la comunidad Astorga en la Bendición de Peregrinos de cada noche, y su constancia al servicio del confesionario cada tarde, además de procurar todo lo necesario para que la comunidad internacional pudiera desempeñar esta tarea pastoral.
Ahora queda evaluar la experiencia con el fin de mejorar esta atención personal y pastoral a peregrinos, pero sin duda esperamos que se convierta en una referencia en el Camino y en un compromiso por la Nueva Evangelización por parte de los Redentoristas de Europa.

At WYD in Rio de Janeiro, Pope Francis recommended young Argentineans to read two basic passages of the Gospel, if they wanted to live it: the Beatitudes and Mathew 25, which is the parable of Jesus identifying himself with the poor, abandoned, sick and the pilgrims.
During the months of July and August, an international community, made up of lays, families and religious Redemptorist, has carried out a Christian Welcome for pilgrims who take a rest in Astorga in their way to Santiago. This community lived in Casa San Alfonso, created by the Redemptorist Province of Madrid to develop this ministry care to pilgrims. Redemptorist of all Europe got involved in this project.
The Redemptorist Missionary fit into a network called “Acogida Cristiana en el Camino” (ACC means in Spanish: Christian Welcome in the Way), make up of hostels and monasteries which would like to recover the Christian roots of the Way to Santiago.
The members of this international community offer each day a welcome and information in front of the door of the Redemptorist Church of Perpetual Help, next to the hostel “Siervas de Maria”. This is the first place that pilgrims see when they enter Astorga. This service is Gospel put into practice: “For I was a pilgrim and you took me in”. We can see in each pilgrim the face of Christ walking beside us.
Every pilgrim is greeted, given information or offered the stamp for the Credencial (“pilgrim’s passport”); they are also invited to the prayer at night. The best hours to welcome the pilgrims are late in the morning and during the afternoon. Most of them walk into our church to pray and from 19:00 to 19:30 they can receive the sacrament of Penance. However, the most important act takes place at 21:00: the night prayer, which ends with the Pilgrim Blessing.
Pilgrims are thankful for this service and lots of them would like to have this spiritual offer in more places along the Way. Every person of the international community can tell anecdotes about this comforting and cheering meeting with the pilgrims. After the prayer, some of them wanted to receive confession or talk with a priest; other came out crying deeply moved and stirred, feeling renewed. At the door, their exhausted faces turned into smiles of gratitude and touching words about their experience in the Way.
This project has just started this summer, but it is already one of the projects that the Conference of Redemptorist of Europe wants to promote in cooperation with lays and young of the entire continent. In fact, it has been presented several times to all the participating countries of the International Redemptorist Young Meeting of San Sperate (Sardinia, Italy).
This international community was possible thanks to many people. No many requirements were needed, only availability for the service. We counted on the help of Fr. Marcin Zubik (Poland), Fr. Klemens Nodewald (Germany, Prov. of Saint Clemens), Fr. Paul Turlay (Ireland), and the missionary lay Fainche Ryan (Ireland), whose presence we sincerely thank a lot.
We also counted on the help of young from Spain, such as Javier Alonso (Sevilla) and Laura Granja (Madrid); Redemptorist lays: Carmen Castro (Jaén), Enrique Casanueva and three families of Missionary Lays of the Holy Redeemer: Pili Hernán and Rafa Junquera, Inma Huertas and Antonio Fuertes, Mónica de Simón and Daniel Primo with their daughters Blanca and Paula (they all came from the Parish Church of Perpetual Help in Madrid). The Spanish Redemptorist who welcomed the pilgrims were the Postulants Carlos Alfonso and Guillermo Rejas; the Redemptorists Students Antonio Puerto and Carlos A. Galán; and the Fathers Damián Mª Montes, Víctor Chacón, Manuel Cabello and Laureano Del Otero, in cooperation with the superior of the Community of Astorga, Fr. José Luis Almendros (who celebrated the Blessing many times) and Fr. Paulino Sutil (responsible of the Casa San Alfonso). We have to highlight the participation of the members of the Community of Astorga in the Pilgrim Blessing every night, and their perseverance in the confessions schedules every evening, as well as their concern for us to have all the stuff needed to develop this ministry project.
The only thing left is evaluating the experience in order to improve this personal and ministry care to pilgrims. At the finish of this first experience, more than 1300 pilgrims were in Astorga’s night prayers in July and August. We undoubtedly hope it turns into a reference point in the Way and into a commitment for the New Evangelization carried out by the Redemptorist in Europe.
